About this work
Seen from behind, a nude woman with long wavy hair reaches one arm up into a tangle of gnarled, leafless branches above her. She is pressed close among several heavily hooded and cloaked figures, one wrapped tightly in drapery in the foreground and another, balding, turning away to the right.
The charcoal is worked in deep, textured blacks for the cloaks and twisting branches, set against the pale, untouched paper of the sky, while the woman's back and legs are rendered in smoother, more finished tone. The crowding of dark, shrouded forms around the single exposed figure, combined with the reaching gesture, creates an unsettled, foreboding atmosphere.
