About this work
Dense undergrowth of tall grasses, dry stalks and small leaves fills the canvas, parting at the center to reveal a bright blue stream or pool that cuts diagonally through the thicket. Patches of red and pink foliage appear at the lower edge, while golden-orange grasses dominate the sides against a dark background.
Saturated cobalt blue, burnt orange, crimson and rose are applied in short, energetic strokes and scratched marks over a near-black ground, creating a richly textured, almost jewel-toned surface. The intense, non-naturalistic color and dense linear brushwork give the tangled undergrowth a vibrant, electric intensity.
