About this work
A slender bell tower with a gilded dome and spire stands at the center of the composition, framed by green trees and flanking apartment buildings along a stone-edged canal. A small arched footbridge crosses the water in the middle distance, and a figure in red walks along the near embankment. The canal fills the foreground, its surface broken by ripples and dappled light.
Bright blue sky, sun-washed ochre stonework and deep green foliage are laid down in thick, textured strokes, with the gold dome picked out in warm impasto highlights. The water is rendered in overlapping patches of teal, violet and cream that catch fragments of sky and architecture. Strong sunlight and confident, palette-knife brushwork give the scene a lively, sunlit clarity.
