About this work
A steep alley or stairway recedes diagonally between a balustraded terrace on the left and a carved, ornamented doorway on the right, its wall covered in dark scrollwork. Deep shadow fills the center of the composition, broken by bright patches of foliage or lantern light glowing yellow-green among the dark shapes.
The scene is built almost entirely from dark browns, ochres and near-black greens, with sudden hits of acid yellow marking light sources within the gloom. Thick, dragged strokes of oil pastel create a rough, encrusted surface, and the contrast between blackness and glowing highlights gives the street a hushed, mysterious atmosphere.
