About this work
Deep snowdrifts and heavy, snow-laden branches fill the foreground, opening in the center to reveal a small lit structure resembling an ornate lantern or shrine window. Inside it, a robed figure with a halo plays a violin, faintly visible through the glow, with snow-covered steps leading up to the scene.
Soft whites, pale pinks, and blue-grays are built up with thick, textured strokes across the snow masses, while the lit interior glows in warmer ochre and rose tones by contrast. The framing of the distant musician by mounds of snow gives the painting a hushed, enigmatic, fairy-tale atmosphere.
