About this work
A monumental brick gateway with paired flanking towers spans the middle ground, its stonework rendered in fine architectural detail beneath a turbulent sky. In front of it, resting on dark, still water, is an oversized pale form shaped like a swan's curved neck and folded wings, its head turned to show an open, snarling mouth, with a faint reflection glimmering in the water below.
Dense parallel hatching builds deep shadow across the brick piers and canal, while the swan-like form is left comparatively pale, its surface worked in short curling strokes suggesting feathers or fur. The contrast between the crisp architectural setting and the strange, ambiguous creature gives the etching a hushed, dreamlike unease despite its recognisable riverside subject.
