About this work
A young man with a furrowed brow and direct, wary gaze fills the frame, wearing a white medical mask stamped with three miniature Orthodox icons and Cyrillic text reading "save and preserve from coronavirus." Flat cyan-blue bars are laid over the image, one crossing his forehead and hairline, others floating against the mottled grey background.
The face is modeled with careful tonal realism in warm greys and browns, set against a scraped, stained, concrete-like surface in cool grey. The intruding turquoise blocks read as a flat, poster-like graphic overlay, lending the image a tense, watchful, uneasy stillness.
