About this work
An invented waterside city gathers three fantastical structures around a still basin: a colonnaded pavilion with statues along its balustrade at left, a domed classical hall reached by a bridge at center, and a soaring gothic tower topped with a figure at right, all doubled in the water's reflection.
Thick, textured strokes of ochre, cream and grey-green build the stonework, which dissolves into a turbulent sky where a pale hazy sun glows through drifting cloud. Uneven light picks out arches and statues, leaving the rest in soft shadow, lending the scene a hushed, dreamlike stillness.
