About this work
Upper register shows a dark cloud built from stippled dots forming an amorphous winged silhouette hanging in an empty sky, with a large gorilla and a smaller gorilla standing together on a rocky outcrop below it; a narrow lower band presents eight sequential poses of the same nude man stretching and bending on the floor, with a circular inset close-up of a single fly.
Dense pointillist stippling builds the amorphous cloud while fine parallel hatching renders the apes' fur; the lower strip is drawn in looser, quicker contour line. The two registers, animal and human, share no ground or scale, and the mismatched textures give the print an unsettled, mysterious air.
