About this work
A snow-covered embankment with a wrought-iron railing runs beside a canal toward a row of pastel-colored buildings and the pale dome of a distant cathedral. A single bare tree stands beside the path, with a few small figures visible along the far side of the street.
The palette is almost monochrome, built from soft greys, dusty pink and pale ochre beneath an overcast, snow-laden sky. Pastel is worked in dry, chalky strokes that blur architectural detail into the mist, giving the embankment a hushed, wintry stillness.
