About this work
A grassy slope climbs diagonally across the foreground, scattered with a few dark trees along its ridge, while a snow-streaked peak rises in the middle distance beyond a lower green ridge. Heavy grey clouds roll across most of the sky, parting just above the mountain to let through a burst of warm golden light.
Loose, confident brushstrokes build the hillside from layered greens and ochre, while the sky is worked in soft greys and blues around the glowing break of sunlight. The high-key contrast between the somber storm light and the warm gap gives the small canvas a charged, atmospheric feel typical of a quick outdoor study.
