About this work
Jagged, snow-covered mountain peaks fill the upper half of the composition, their glaciers and rock faces partly veiled by drifting cloud in the valley below. A turquoise alpine lake occupies the foreground, bordered by weathered grey boulders and slopes of dark green vegetation leading up toward the high ridgelines.
The palette moves from cool blue-white snow and rock through misty pale grey cloud to the saturated teal of the water and deep greens of the slopes. Crisp, detailed rendering of rock texture contrasts with soft, diffused cloud forms, giving the scene a grand, dramatic sense of scale and altitude.
