About this work
A woman with dark hair pulled back stands close behind a fair-haired girl in a white blouse, both turned in profile toward the same middle distance. The mother's face is only partly visible over the child's shoulder, her arm implied rather than shown, creating a quiet, protective closeness between the two figures.
The canvas is built almost entirely from soft, broken strokes of pale blue, cream, pink and grey, with the girl's face picked out in warmer, more defined color against the loosely brushed, atmospheric ground. The dissolving background and gentle, diffused light give the double portrait a tender, contemplative calm.
