About this work

A woman leans down over a girl standing chest-deep in a river, one hand resting on her shoulder and the other guiding her arm as she washes or steadies her. A second child's head appears at the lower left, also partly submerged, suggesting a family bathing together at the water's edge.

Broad, loaded strokes of pink, red and ochre define the figures against a shimmering backdrop of green and gold water reflections rendered in horizontal bands. Warm, high-key light and loose, gestural brushwork give the scene an immediate, sunlit energy centered on the tenderness of the mother's touch.
