About this work
A narrow street opens onto a tiled archway framed by ochre and white walls, hung with a dense array of carpets and fabrics in red, blue and yellow. Figures in pale hooded djellabas walk along the shaded pavement on the left, while a seated group gathers at a low table beneath an awning on the right, a single tree casting dappled shade over the scene.
Thick, loaded strokes of saturated color build the hanging textiles into a patchwork of red, blue, ochre and white, set against the more solidly painted architecture. Sunlight filters through the tree in broken patches across the pavement and figures. The rapid, sketch-like brushwork and dense color give the street a lively, market-day warmth.
