About this work

His bare shoulders and collarbone are indicated with loose, open hatching, while the face is worked in far greater detail, capturing wrinkles, brow and beard texture.
Drawn in reddish-brown sanguine and black chalk on warm tan paper, the piece uses the paper's own tone as a mid-value, with white highlights left bare and dark accents built through cross-hatching around the eyes and beard.
