About this work
A stand of pines and a single tall, bare-branched tree rise from a rough, undulating patch of ground, their upper trunks and crowns dissolving into dense fog. A dark spruce stands out more clearly in the middle distance, while further trees behind it fade almost completely into the pale grey-white haze.
The palette is limited to soft greys, warm ochres and muted browns, with almost no sharp edges anywhere in the scene. Dry, textured strokes describe the tangled undergrowth in the foreground, while the sky and distant trees are laid in with thin, hazy passes of paint. The effect is hushed and mysterious, a landscape muffled by fog.
