About this work
The composition looks down over a crowded expanse of rooftops, gables and brick chimneys stacked at varying heights and angles, with satellite dishes, wires and a few potted plants scattered across the nearer roof terraces; small domed towers and spires are just visible on the hazy skyline beyond.
Soft, chalky pastel strokes build the scene in muted salmon-pink, grey-blue and ochre tones, with the broad blank wall of a gable left almost untouched to catch the light. The hazy, close-toned palette and soft edges create a still, slightly dusty summer-afternoon atmosphere over the city.
