About this work
Pilgrims, many women wearing headscarves and one child in a red dress, gather and walk across a stone plaza before a monumental white cathedral crowned with golden domes and a mosaic icon over its open doors; a second, smaller church with a tented steeple stands further back at left, steps leading up to the entrance.
Loose pastel strokes render the architecture with soft modeling, cool blue sky offsetting the warm gold of the domes and mosaic, figures sketched economically in muted color, giving the scene a hushed, devotional calm.
