About this work
A mermaid lies draped across dark rocks at the water's edge, her long auburn hair and a wine-colored cloth trailing across her bare shoulders and tail. Her tail fin curves up out of the sea just behind her, ringed with foam, while her open hand rests near the waves. Beyond her, layered cliffs and golden dunes frame a curling turquoise sea, with a small sailing ship visible in the distant upper left.
Cool blues and turquoises for the sea contrast with warm ochre cliffs and the mermaid's rosy skin, unified by soft, blended brushwork with little visible texture. Pale foam is picked out in thin white strokes over the waves, giving the whole scene a hushed, fairy-tale stillness.
