About this work

The plate is filled almost entirely by a woman's head shown frontally, her mouth open in a snarl and eyes fixed in a hostile stare. Writhing snakes twist through her wind-blown curls, and drops of red run from the severed neck below, set against a plain dark teal ground bordered by a repeating pattern of cream, red and ochre roundels.

Flesh is painted in warm ochre and rust hatching that models the furrowed brow and jaw with strong contrast against the dark background, while the snakes are picked out in cool teal and gold. The tight framing and glaring expression give the image a confrontational, dramatic intensity typical of a gorgon mask.
