About this work
A tightly packed crowd of masquerade faces fills the lower half of the canvas, pale rose and mauve heads tilted at different angles, some in profile, some looking upward, overlapping so their features merge into one another. Above them, tall gold and cream vertical streaks suggest hanging drapery, confetti, or streaming light falling over the gathering.
Loosely brushed in oil over a deep violet-grey ground, the faces are built from smeared pinks, mauves and ochres with dark contour lines picking out eyes and mouths. Warm gold strokes rake down from the top of the canvas, catching a theatrical light across the crowd and giving the scene a hazy, dreamlike, festive charge.
