About this work
A large cathedral with a turquoise and gold dome and rows of arched windows fills the upper half of the canvas, crowned by a cross and framed by a wide double rainbow. Set into its facade is a circular icon showing a robed, gold-haloed saint beside a river scene. Below, a long red pier lined with buildings leads toward the building across a strip of water.
The architecture is drawn with flattened, ornamental precision, its arches, cupolas and lettering picked out in fine gold and turquoise line work against a pale sky. Warm reds and oranges dominate the foreground pier, contrasting with the cool dome above, and the symmetrical composition and glowing halo give the image a serene, devotional stillness.
