About this work
A pale, rounded form on the left - reading as a crouching lion or guardian statue, with a maned head and long body - sits at the edge of a nocturnal street scene. Behind it rises a dark red-roofed building with a glowing gold window, and a paler structure continues to the right beneath a deep blue sky dotted with a bright moon and small stars.
Paint is applied in dense, ridged strokes, the cream of the statue built up almost sculpturally against surrounding maroon, ochre, and indigo.
