About this work

Multiple panicles of lilac in violet, mauve, and white crowd the composition edge to edge, their small four-petaled florets clustered densely along woody stems. Pale green heart-shaped leaves and thin branches thread between the blossoms, with lighter, almost dissolved clusters receding into the background to suggest depth within the flowering shrub.

Washes of violet, blue-lavender, and rose blend wet-into-wet, their edges blooming and softening where pigment pools on damp paper, while patches of untouched white paper stand in for the brightest highlights. Greens are laid in flatter, more controlled strokes for contrast. The overall effect is fresh and airy, typical of a quick, atmospheric watercolor botanical study.
