About this work
A dense, overflowing cluster of lilac blossoms, ranging from deep violet through lilac-pink to white, fills most of the canvas, spilling from a plain white vase just visible at the base. Dark green leaves punctuate the mass of flowers, with a few sprigs drooping over the vase's rim against an almost blank pale background.
Paint is applied thickly with a palette knife and loaded brush, building ridges and dabs of color rather than blended surfaces, so the flowers read as texture as much as form. Cool violet-greys dominate against warm white highlights, and drips of thinned paint at the edges leave the composition feeling immediate and energetic.
