About this work
A man in a red suit strides down the center of a wide avenue, balancing a tall stack of pale objects on his head and casting a long amber shadow. Ornate lampposts march away on both sides, their glowing globes lining a converging boulevard flanked by tall buildings. A dark, cloaked figure walks alone further back, and a shapeless dark form lies on the pavement nearby.
Cool grey-blue stone sets off the warm red of the central figure and the golden halos of the lamps, creating strong contrast. Dragged brushstrokes describe the wet pavement and smeared trails of lamplight, while the figure reads as flatter, solid color. The empty, symmetrical street and the strange balancing act give the scene a dreamlike, unsettling charge.
