About this work
A robed figure with a featureless black head stands wrapped in swathes of crimson and orange drapery, cradling a bleached animal skull at chest height. A pale, translucent hand reaches in from the left toward the skull, while streaks of dark red fall like drips against a near-black ground behind the figure.
Paint is built up thickly in dragged, overlapping strokes, the hot red and orange core set against blacks and deep maroon shadows. Chalky white marks the skull and hand against the murky ground. The loose, gestural brushwork and enclosed, shadowy space give the picture a brooding, ritualistic mood.
