About this work
Several half-length figures crowd the frame: a woman in a feathered headdress raises a tambourine on the right, a bearded man in a white turban plays a large stringed instrument at center, and two women in a plumed hat and pale gown sing or listen beside him. The figures overlap tightly, forming a lively, theatrical cluster of performers.
Rich yellows, blues and flesh tones are set off by deep shadow, with strong directional light picking out faces, instruments and jewelry in Baroque fashion. Confident, fluid brushwork and warm glazes give the scene a festive, animated energy typical of a candlelit musical gathering.
