About this work
A young woman is shown in profile from the shoulders up, dark hair swept back with loose strands falling along her neck. Her bare shoulders are wrapped in a deep-blue shawl covered edge to edge with stylized flowers and bordered by a red-and-white braid, while the wall behind breaks into flat patchwork rectangles of cream, ochre and blue.
Paint is built up in thick, tactile strokes, the shawl rendered almost like mosaic inlay in overlapping cobalt, turquoise and near-black blues. Warm flesh tones contrast with the cooler patchwork ground, and the loose, textured brushwork throughout gives the portrait a quiet, absorbed, intimate mood.
