About this work

The canvas is filled with the head and shoulders of a young child, eyes lowered, lips pursed, both small fists raised and pressed together beneath the chin as if sucking or chewing on them. The pose is intimate and frontal, cropped tightly so the face and hands dominate the frame, with bare shoulders visible at the bottom edge.

Flesh tones are built from thick, ridged strokes of cream, pink and ochre paint applied with a palette knife, leaving a rough, sculptural surface that catches light across the cheeks and knuckles. The surrounding ground is scraped in dark indigo and black with streaks of blue, throwing the pale, textured figure into sharp relief and giving the image a raw, brooding intimacy.
