About this work
A monastery building with a red-and-gold painted cornice and blue-tiled eaves rises steeply on the left, its golden ochre wall catching full midday sun. A small figure in a dark red robe walks alone through the narrow passage below, dwarfed by the looming structure. Whitewashed walls, distant trees and a strip of deep blue sky complete the setting.
Thick, textured strokes of ochre and gold build the sunlit wall, while crisp red and blue accents pick out the traditional roof trim above. The deep, saturated sky and hard-edged cast shadow across the pavement convey the sharp light of midday, with the monk's small red silhouette the only note of movement. The overall effect is bright, still and quietly monumental.
