About this work
Two figures sit side by side inside a curved carriage or cabin window, rendered almost entirely in silhouette. The man in profile leans toward the woman, whose tall hat is topped with a small toy-like castle turret. Their joined hands rest between them while beyond the arched window a pale, atmospheric view of water and distant buildings opens up.
The whole scene is drenched in deep indigo and blue-grey, broken only by the pale glow of the window and faint warm accents on the hat's turret. Loose, wet brushstrokes blur the figures into near-silhouette, softening edges and detail. The monochrome palette and hazy light give the picture a hushed, dreamlike quiet, as if recalled from a half-remembered story.
