About this work

A tall cylindrical stone tower with weathered pink and grey walls and a stepped stone stair dominates the composition, its base skirting a grassy riverbank. To its left stands a small whitewashed church with a dark onion dome, and the whole group is mirrored in the calm water in the foreground.

Heavy impasto and rough, dragged brushwork give the masonry a crumbling, ancient texture, while a turbulent grey-blue sky of churning clouds presses down over the scene. Cool shadow and pale highlight model the tower's curve, producing a brooding, monumental atmosphere.
