About this work
Layered fronds and broad leaves in varying greens and yellows fill the composition, arching from the top of the canvas over a patch of orange-lit ground that reads as a sunlit path. A vertical band of burnt orange suggests a tree trunk or shaft of light cutting through the foliage, with touches of pink and deep red low in the undergrowth.
Paint is built up in thick ridges and slabs with a palette knife, each leaf a separate loaded stroke rather than a blended surface. The high-key greens and yellows against warm orange and cool violet shadows give the tangled vegetation a dense, sun-struck vibrancy, the heavy texture standing in for the humidity and clutter of a jungle interior.
