About this work
Two masked figures share the canvas: at upper left a face in white greasepaint peers out from beneath a dark feathered headdress and ruffled collar, one hand raised near the shoulder. Beside it, filling most of the composition, a second pale mask is set within an elaborate covering patterned with small rosettes and flourishes in blue, pink and gold, its features rendered with heavy-lidded, half-closed eyes.
Executed in oil with thick, dabbed strokes, the picture is dominated by warm rust and umber tones broken by bursts of blue and pink pigment scattered across the patterned costume. Loose black contour lines pick out the masks' features against the textured, encrusted surface, giving the pair a hallucinatory, carnival-like intensity.
