Italy's landscape. Way to a church

A paved lane curves from a gabled house at left toward a domed, colonnaded church in the middle distance, its portico framed by classical columns and a cross-topped cupola. Cypress trees, a wall spilling with pink and red blossoms, and at right an ornate iron gate with a classical male statue on a pedestal line the route.

Warm late-day light rakes across the path and stucco wall, casting long lavender shadows and picking flowers out in red against deep green foliage. Tight, detailed brushwork and the warm-cool contrast of golden stone against a pale sky give the view a tranquil, sunlit serenity.
