About this work
A granite embankment wall cuts across the canvas, its arched stone drainage outlet at the center, with dark river water rippling in the foreground and small figures strolling along the promenade above. Beyond the water, a hazy townscape recedes into dusk, rooftops and a slender spire barely visible against the fading sky.
Cool violet and slate-blue tones dominate the water and stone, warmed only by a touch of ochre on the building at the right edge. Quick, loose strokes capture the texture of wet granite and broken reflections, while soft, diffused light creates a quiet, fading-light atmosphere at the close of day.
