About this work
A tall standing figure wrapped in a heavy hooded cloak fills the center of the sheet, its garment marked across the chest and torso with the drawn outline of a fortified hill-town, its towers and walls. The figure's open hands hang at its sides, reaching down toward two faces that emerge from the lower edge of the composition, looking upward.
Broad, soft lithographic shading models the drapery in graduated greys, while the embedded city motif is picked out in finer, more linear strokes. The surrounding field is left in near-total black, isolating the figure in a narrow shaft of light. The device of a walled town worn on the body gives the image a symbolic, dreamlike weight.
