About this work
Seen from below, an ornate Baroque church facade fills the canvas, its pilasters, niche statues and curved pediment rising above a large arched window glowing deep blue. Two stone staircases curve up from the foreground on either side and converge toward the entrance, their balustrades sketched in quick, dark strokes.
The palette is built from cool grays and browns punctuated by the glowing cobalt of the window and sky, applied in broad, loosely blocked strokes that suggest carved ornament rather than describe it in detail. The strong tonal contrast and shadowed stone give the scene a dramatic, hushed grandeur.
