About this work
A dancer kneels on bent legs, torso twisted, pulling two long red veils taut with outstretched arms. She wears a beaded, fringed bodice, jeweled bracelets and headpiece, and strands of pearls draped across her hips, set against a dark ground flanked by patterned brocade curtains on either side.
Warm ochre and deep brown tones dominate, broken by the vivid red of the veils and glints of gold and pearl on the costume, all built with thick, encrusted brushwork. The dark ground and dynamic spread of drapery give the scene an intense, theatrical drama.
