About this work
A single large dragon-like form, built of interlocking looping segments, coils across the square canvas in deep reds and oranges. A small crowned or masked face peers out from within the coils at right, a wing-shaped fragment sits at upper left, and dark metal knotwork plaques are inset along the winding body.
The palette is almost monochrome, built from warm reds, rust and burnt orange against a dark brown ground scored with pale scratched lines. Heavy impasto and inset metal give the surface a scorched, molten relief quality. The tightly coiled shape and glowing color create an intense, fiery mood suited to the mythic title.
