About this work
A tall corner apartment building fills the frame, its pale, mottled facade catching diffuse light while a row of balconies recedes along the side wall toward a shopfront at street level. Below, a wide street is patched with dirty snow and puddles, bare, spindly trees stand in the foreground, and a small figure walks along the pavement in the distance.
The building's wall is built up in thick, encrusted impasto of chalky whites, ochres, and pale blues, while the sky and ground are painted more thinly in flat gray and brown. Loose, dragged strokes describe the bare branches and puddled ground with a few quick marks, and the overcast light and worn textures give the scene a subdued, wintry melancholy.
