About this work
A group of Red Army soldiers surges forward beneath a large red flag bearing the hammer and sickle, one man's arm raised with a pistol, others gripping rifles with fixed bayonets. In the foreground a German soldier wearing a swastika armband recoils with hands raised, while another falls back over barbed wire. The figures crowd diagonally across the canvas in a dense mass of bodies and weapons.
The painting is built from a single burning palette of reds, oranges and blacks, so figures emerge through value contrast rather than hue. Blocky forms and thick outlines give the soldiers monumental weight, while the flag's folds sweep across the canvas top. The effect is charged and triumphant, capturing a wartime assault.
