About this work

Several tall-masted sailing vessels are moored side by side along a quay, their bare rigging rising against a pale sky, while smaller motorboats and a rowboat sit closer to the viewer in the foreground water. Behind the ships stretches a continuous row of multi-story waterfront buildings in yellow, pink and cream, their facades and windows picked out in touches of warm color. The calm harbor water mirrors the hulls, masts and buildings in softened, rippled reflections.

The palette stays muted and cool overall, grey-blue water and sky warmed by ochre, rust and pink accents in the boats and buildings. Paint is applied thickly with a loaded brush or knife, leaving ridged, textured strokes for rigging, hulls and reflections rather than smooth detail. The dense clustering of masts and quiet water give the port a still, workaday calm.
