About this work
A massive sheaf of golden wheat, bound with heavy rope, fills most of the composition, carried on the back of a woman glimpsed only from the shoulders up at the lower right. She wears a pink and red patterned blouse and a light headscarf, her face turned and partly shaded beneath the towering stack of grain against a clear blue sky.
Warm gold and straw tones dominate, built up with energetic, directional brushstrokes that trace the individual stalks and ears of wheat catching bright sunlight. The woman's clothing is rendered in looser strokes of pink and crimson, and the strong contrast between the luminous wheat and deep blue sky gives the scene a vivid, sunlit intensity.
