About this work
In a circular composition, two women confront each other over a chessboard set with pieces and a resting white dove. The woman at left wears an ornate blue-and-gold gown with a jeweled belt and holds a red fan beside a tall bouquet of roses, lilies and irises rising from a bronze urn of pears, apples and plums. Facing her, a winged figure in a flowered robe holds an iris, while a large bird swoops above and two blue parrots perch nearby.
Jewel-toned blues, reds and golds are rendered with flat, meticulous decorative detail, every fold, feather and petal picked out with enamel-like precision. The dense, gilded symmetry lends the confrontation a hushed, enigmatic tension.
