About this work
An open pomegranate, its rind peeled back into pointed segments, rests inside a footed blue-and-white porcelain bowl set within a rounded stone archway. The wall behind is patterned with painted branches bearing small pomegranates and leaves on turquoise ground, and a long-tailed patterned bird stands on the tiled floor at the base of the vessel.
Cool blue-greens and warm terracotta browns balance across the composition, with the ruby-red pomegranate seeds the single vivid accent. Forms are flattened and decoratively patterned rather than deeply modeled, recalling Persian miniature painting, giving the whole an ornamental, quietly poetic feel.
