About this work
A pair of bare arms cradles an armful of cut flowers - tulips, lilac clusters and pale carnations - held close against the body, hands clasped beneath the stems. The bouquet fills most of the frame, its blooms and buds densely overlapping, with only a shoulder and hint of dress suggesting the figure holding it.
Delicate washes of pink, lilac and mint green blend into a hazy floral field, with fine pencil underdrawing left visible in petals and leaves. The loose, translucent handling and pale, blended tones give the image a soft, dreamy quality, more decorative pattern than firm still life.
