About this work
Three white and grey birds are arranged in a vertical sequence, each shown from below with wings caught in a different position, from a tight upward sweep to a wide, flat spread. Isolated against a plain dark field with no landscape or horizon, they read as successive stages of a single fall or dive rather than a flock in level flight.
Rendered in cool whites and greys with fine feather detail picked out against the near-black ground, the stark contrast gives the birds a bold, graphic presence. The repeated, cropped poses and surrounding void create a tense sense of motion frozen mid-drop.
